Second Card

Turn two. Remember where you saw it.

Second Card
Works on phone, tablet and desktop · No download · No account Also on itch.io

What it is

A card game for one or two people. Turn over two cards: a matching pair is yours, and you go again. Whoever holds the most pairs when the board is clear wins.

The board comes in more than one size, and every size holds an odd number of pairs, so a game can never end level.

The computer forgets

It only knows cards that have been turned face up, and it forgets older ones the way a person does. Beat it and it remembers more next time; lose and it eases off.

A missed pair stays face up for a second and a half, for both players.

How to play

  • Turn a cardTap it
  • Play a friendTap the other seat
  • Play againTap during the result

Tapping a card on a board nobody is playing starts a game against the computer. To play a friend instead, tap the other seat's panel, where it says Two players? Tap here.

On a desktop, click the cards, or move with the arrow keys and turn a card with Enter. Keys 1 and 2 take a seat.

What isn't settled yet

It hasn't been tried with real players yet. A mode for playing alone against your own best score, a larger board, and games for three or four people are all waiting on that.

Build Log

  1. Build 2

Every board holds an odd number of pairs, so two players can never finish level. The computer only ever learns a card when it is turned face up, and it forgets older ones the way a person does. A tie needs an even number of pairs, so the board sizes rule it out rather than a tie-break.
