Five and Ten

One swipe carries the line, the hook and the power.

What it is

Bowling in both codes. Ten-pin, and the five-pin game where the pins are worth 2, 3, 5, 3 and 2 by position and a frame runs to three balls. One person alone, or up to four taking turns on one screen.

The sheet works the way a real one does: a frame's total stays blank until its bonus is known, and no total appears after a blank one, so the card never shows a score the game hasn't earned yet.

The swipe is the whole game

Touch the lane and the ball comes under your finger; slide sideways to move it. Swipe up to roll. The start of the path sets the line, the turn at the end of it sets the hook, and how fast you finish sets the power.

A tap rolls nothing, and neither does a lift before the swipe has travelled far enough, or a sideways slide with no push up the lane.

How to play

  • Move the ballSlide your finger
  • RollSwipe up
  • Take a seatTap a free one
  • Put a name on itTap the name on the sheet

A name typed on the sheet lasts for that game only, and nothing about it is stored.

On a desktop, the left and right arrows move the ball a board at a time, and a degree of line with Shift held. Up and down set the power, [ and ] the hook. Space or Enter bowls, and M turns the sound off. A readout appears once you use a key.

What isn't settled yet

Whether five-pin plays as generously as it currently feels, and whether the speed range suits a phone as well as it suits a tablet. There is no short game yet, and no bowler to watch: the camera stays with the ball and the pins.

Build Log

  1. Build 4

A strike now sets off a starburst behind the word in the masking unit's own gold, with the bowler's name under it in their seat colour: one and three quarter seconds for a strike, a little under one and a half for a spare, and a tap skips it. Gold washed out against pale maple, so a dark halo sits behind it. It is a screen effect only — no physics, no camera, and no cost to a ball.

  2. Build 3

The lane and the pin deck were two colliders, and the seam a step before the head pin kicked the ball five to nine centimetres into the air with no pins on it at all. They are one collider now, so the ball is dead on the lane and meets the pins at the bounce a real one has. Hops among the pins fell from a median of about twenty centimetres to under one, and three checks now hold that line.
