What it is

Target archery at a real face: the 122 cm ten-ring target, scored 10 down to 1, with the inner ten counted as an X. Three arrows an end and five ends a round, so 150 at most.

Touch and hold, and the bow comes up to full draw in 0.9 seconds. At full draw the sight settles and stays steadiest until 4.5 seconds; after that the arm tires and the sight wanders wider, and held for 11 seconds the archer lets the arrow down. Let go before full draw and nothing is shot.

The arrow leaves at 57 metres a second, drops under gravity, slows in the air and drifts with the wind. The wind is set before each end and doesn’t change during it, and every archer in that end shoots in the same wind. The flag shows it, and the first end is a light one. An arrow touching a line scores the higher ring.

Up to four archers take turns on one screen, and a tie at the top is settled by one arrow each, closest to the middle. Your best total stays on this device, kept per distance.

How to play

  • DrawTouch and hold
  • AimDrag
  • ShootLet go
  • Name an archerTap their chip at the top

A second finger never draws or shoots. Names can be up to 14 characters and show on the chips, the banners and the result card. When nobody is playing, the game shoots an end by itself.

On a desktop, the mouse button works the same way: press to draw, drag to aim, release to shoot. Or hold Space to draw, aim with the arrow keys, and release Space to shoot. Escape lets the arrow down, M turns the sound on or off, + adds an archer during the first end, and Enter plays again from the result card.

What isn’t settled yet

How far the sight drifts and how quickly the arm tires come from a model of a steady archer, not yet from many people’s hands.

The distance. A round starts at 70 metres, and 30 and 50 are there for a venue to choose. Which one a first-timer should meet is open.

The wind is shown twice, on the flag and as a number on the target view. Whether the number stays is open.

Build Log

  1. Build 11

Every let-go is scored at the moment the finger lifted, not when the page next drew a frame. The game reads the touch’s, click’s or key’s own timestamp and works out where the sight was at that instant. A stamp of zero, one from the future, or one more than five seconds old falls back to now. Worth writing down: in a game decided by a single release, the only fair clock is the one the finger used.
